The GRE as an admission test is required from students who wish to continue their studies on the graduate level in the United States.
The GRE consists of a General Test and several Subject Tests. The tests are designed to assess academic knowledge and skills relevant to graduate study. The General Test measures verbal, quantitative and analytical abilities. The Subject Tests measure the examinee's knowledge in a special field of study. The General Test and any of the Subject tests can be taken separately, too. Total time for the General Test administration is 4,5 hours (2 hours and 15 minutes are alloted for answering questions that count toward the test score). Total testing time for each Subject Test is 2 hours 50 minutes. Since the 1997/1998 testing year the GRE General Test has been administered in a computer-based format. The Subject Tests are still paper-based.The following Subject Tests can be chosen: Biochemistry,Cell and Molecular Biology; Biology; Chemistry; Computer Science; Literature in English; Mathematics; Physics; Psychology.
In case of the computer-based General Test examinees have the option either to cancel or see their scores at the end of the test. Official score reports will be mailed to examinees and to designated institutions 10 to 15 days after the test date. For paper-based testing, scores will be available approximately 6 weeks after the test administration.GRE Test scores are reportable for 5 years, all scores earned during this time will be reported to each designated institutions.
